FEBRUARY 2017 Newsletter
Only 3 weeks into the New Year and there’s already a lot to report!… about my ‘Sticks in the Smoke’ exhibition, Tanya’s Wild Wood exhibition at Shaftesbury Arts Centre, the last 2 days of our WINTER SALE. And, I’m really excited about my New Teaching Studio! To find out more, read below.
Meanwhile, I’m over the moon and honoured to be shortlisted for the Arts and Culture category in the 2017 Wiltshire Life Awards. The ceremony is in March, so I’ll let you know how it goes. Hmm, that gives me a month to get my suit dry cleaned!
There’s an illustrated interview about my work, featuring in The Artist Magazine this month. Click here to view the article.

‘Brushstrokes for Christmas!
It’s back to the wellie- wearing season again here at Bull Mill – heavy rain over the past few days turned the lane into a torrent and brought a flood outside my cottage! The last few hazel leaves are clinging on in the woods and turn almost fluorescent yellow in the late autumn sunlight (I have in mind a series of paintings based on those. I’ll let you know when they materialise!)
Meanwhile, we have our exciting Bull Mill Christmas Bazaar starting on Saturday 3 – Sunday 11 December. I will have a wide range of work on show including three winter seascapes, including ‘Pagura’ Acrylic on canvas 101 x 81cm at the bottom. Also a wall of small ‘Christmas present’ paintings. Tanya will be showing lots of new pieces, including ‘Inari’ Oil on wood below (see more of Tanya’s work at www.tanyahinton.jimdo.com).
Come and join us to celebrate the run up to Christmas with a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine. There are lots more Christmas gift ideas in the rest of Bull Mill, see the card here for full details..
I’m showing a range of winter- themed paintings for inclusion in the Christmas Exhibition at the Jerram Gallery, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3LN. Tel: 01935 815261. It runs from 26 November – 23 December. It includes ‘Hibera’ Acrylic on canvas 61 x 61cm at the top.
Three new canvases will be hanging in the Quartz Visual Arts Festival at Queens College, Trull Road, Taunton, TA1 4QS. It runs from Friday 16 – Thursday 22 December from 11-5pm. Tanya will also be showing some work there. Find out more here

‘The nights are drawing in..!
On these chilly mornings the first task in the studio is to light the fire before any kind of creative activity can take place! Then brew a pot of coffee to sit on top! And from this week it’ll be dark when we close up in the evening!
We can’t even think about hibernating, though! At least not yet, there’s just too much to do! I have to get new work ready for delivering to galleries around the country in November. But before then, they’ll be on show (and available for purchase) at our ‘FIRST SATURDAYS’ Open Studio, on 5 November from 10am – 5pm. October’s new crop include: ‘Filipenda’ Acrylic on canvas. 107 x 107cm (above) . It will be great to see you if you can make it (we’ll have the log fire blazing!)
I am working on a series of winter- themed paintings for inclusion in the Christmas Exhibition at the Jerram Gallery, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3LN. Tel: 01935 815261. It runs from 26 November – 23 December. I’ll include some images of these in next month’s newsletter.
Tanya Hinton is showing some new pieces at our Open Studio on 5 November. See ‘Song of Summer’ Oil on Wood. 67 x 15cm, below. It’s been great to be back working in the studio again after being in the gallery at Stourhead for 3 weeks!
I’m on a shortlist of 2 artists for a commission of a collection of paintings for a City company, so I’ve been working on some large pieces to be voted on by the workforce. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and will let you know next month how it goes!
I’m continuing my ‘Sticks in the Smoke’ London parks and gardens project. Last week I was at the impressive Whitehall Gardens in Westminster. Please do read my blog here.
I’m really pleased to announce that my ‘stourhead / fifty- two / twelve / four’ exhibition raised £1145 for Alzheimers Support. Thank you again for visiting and making it so worthwhile! Half the pieces in the in the exhibition sold, including a couple of pieces bought by the National Trust for their collection! I will continue to donate 10% of the sale of any of the remaining pieces to Alzheimers Support.
JUNE OPEN STUDIO
Once again, our ‘First Saturdays‘ open studio won’t be on the first Saturday of June, sorry! It will be on Saturday 11 June instead (10 – 5). Next week we’re off to Paris! (we made the booking a few weeks ago and then realised the clash of dates- whoops!) Of course, you’re welcome to visit the studio at any other time by arrangement, it would be great to see you!
On show will be some of my Stourhead paintings, including: ‘september / stourhead’, Acrylic on canvas 60 x 60cm (top). I’m also hoping to get some brand new river pieces finished off and hung.
FIRST- VIEW SUMMER EXHIBITION
Two of the large stourhead season paintings (see below) are being shown at the moment in the First- View Gallery Summer Exhibition at Stourhead from Sat 28 May – Sun 19 June. There are also a number of the smaller studies on show too. The gallery is open every day from 11- 5.
‘summer stourhead’. Acrylic on canvas. 107 x 66cm. £2400
‘winter stourhead’. Acrylic on canvas. 107 x 66cm. £2400
My ‘stourhead / fifty- two / twelve / four’ exhibition starts on 15 April. It runs until 6 May.
The exhibition is the result of weekly studies made at Stourhead lake and gardens for a whole year, exploring some of the more secret places in and around this most beautiful and fascinating location, throughout all months and seasons of the year.
I’m really excited about the show but, right now trying not to panic about having to frame- up the 52 weekly studies, 12 paintings representing the months + 4 larger pieces representing each season! (see ‘Spring’ Acrylic on canvas 82 x 82cm at the top).
Please find your invitation below (if you’d like to receive a card in the post, you can contact me here).
Donations and a proportion of sales will be in aid of Alzheimers Support. Such an important charity, giving vital practical help to dementia sufferers and their families in this area.
I really hope you can make it to the exhibition. It would be great to see you there, either at the private view on Friday 15 April, or during the 3 weeks until 6 May. I’m planning to be there most of the time, although there may be one or two days when I’m having to catch up with studio work, in which case Tanya will be there, or my daughter Millie.
Please do contact me if you’d like any more information.
I really enjoy this time of year, with the days beginning to get longer and signs of the onset of spring. But in some ways I’m going to miss the low golden winter sun, and those few frosty mornings that we’ve had. I’ve been working on a range of pieces exploring the winter light and colours, such as ‘Matutia’ Acrylic on canvas 81 x 81cm, above.
These paintings will be previewed this Saturday 5 March at our ‘First Saturdays’ Open Studio at Bull Mill Studio, before being consigned to Artique Galleries in Windsor and Cambridge the following week. It would be great to see you if you can make it (open from 10 – 5)
I’m getting work finished and ready for my ‘Stourhead 52 / 12 / 4’ exhibition to be held at First View Gallery at Stourhead from 15 April – 6 May 2016.
To continue the wintery theme, this is one of the 52 studies which will be on show: painted on 3 February last year ( I think it was the only snowfall we had here in 2015!).
Visit the projects page for further info.
My new project: ‘Sticks in the Smoke′ is progressing well. I’m visiting, researching and drawing a different public garden or park in Central London each week. Finding out about the history and development of these spaces is absolutely fascinating. Please do read my Sticks-in-the-Smoke blog which I’m updating every week (I’d be really grateful if you could share it).
This research is leading to a collection of paintings exploring the theme of city green spaces from the perspective of a rural landscape painter, which will be exhibited in London in 2017.
See my sketchbook drawing below, of Leicester Square Gardens from 2 weeks ago.
